Metroid Fusion for the GBA
The 'Pimpin' new suit, with sexy blue accessories!!
Yay! I was NOT let down here... when i saw this released on the GBA quite a few years ago now i remember looking at the 'tainted' Samus on the cover thinking to myself "Hmmmm, a new Metroid, but it looks really different!" when I was growing up I was very limited in what I was able to purchase. My family was not poor, we had food, housing, warmth, clothing and all the important stuff but unless it was my birthday or Christmas then I could forget ANY chance of buying a video game! So I used to window shop a lot! "Ahhh if I had cash, I would buy you first!" or just fantasize about jumping into a pool full of Nintendo cartridges, the funny thing about fantasies is that physics don't necessarily rule the world, i would swim through the cartridges of all NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA and 64 games that I had ever wanted as if they were liquid... and I would be Happy!
*Ahem* back on track... I saw this game and thought to myself that if my mother was feeling any kind of generous, that this would not be the game on the top of my list, if I was getting 1 game (2 if I was lucky) a year, then it was going to be the BEST GAME EVER CREATED, not one that I wanted to check out for sheer curiosity.
For some strange reason, the opening movie to this game already had my nerves on edge, it could of been the lack of music in the background broken only by Samus' voice, or the fact that Samus very nearly dies against an enemy that you can not fight against. Not sure, but I was hooked straight up! Which is more than I was expecting before I played it. |
The Metroid Cure!
Samus almost dies due to an unknown enemy virus that was lurking in an extremely easy monster. After killing it to protect the scientists that is her mission to protect, the X-Virus floats up out of the corpse and floats around until it decides to land on and infect Samus. Rushed back to the emergency back at Galactic Federation Containment units, one scientist decides to use a vaccine made from a Metroid cell. I guess the idea is that the Metroid being a life sucking entity applied to the right area would suck, devour and then destroy the X-virus in the isolated area... what ever the science is behind it, it seems to work, but with a small side effect. The combination of the life sucking Metroid cell and the cells from the 'cell copying X-virus' mutate and combine with the host (Samus) to change her physical make up so that the X-virus is no longer a threat.
Up, Down or Left? hmmm
In fact, upon collecting free floating X-virus' while on your adventure, they act as item and health replenishes. Green, refilling your missiles by a certain amount, Yellow refilling a certain amount of health and red refilling all of the above. There is a blue virus, but that is harmful to Samus for a small period of time due to the fact that it is a Cold based virus. After being fused with a Metroid cell Samus adopts one of their flaws... Susceptibility to negative temperatures. But hey, what sort of Metroid would it be with out the upgrades to with stand cold and hot temperatures? Once you regain the adaptions of your Varia suit you again have the ability to withstand cooler and warmer temperatures and the blue X-virus replenishes a larger health amount than the more common yellow.
Upon starting the game, you lack all of your upgrades, as per usual for Metroid, it seems that the scientists had to remove all the best parts of your upgraded suit from the last adventure that you had in order to minimize the impact of the X-virus and maximize your chance of survival. So yes, it is again a slow start to your adventure, what being able to crawl before you walk, walk before you run and run before you start blasting the crap out of things with the skill and style of a powerful Samus!

Galactic Fed Pet Store!
After the first few upgrades (and a couple of small movies) you get to see a suspicious shadow talking to the computer that is guiding you about whether or not Samus has clued into the big plan at hand... Just who IS this mysterious and unidentified person talking maliciously about the plans at hand? I can not say, you do not actually find out who exactly they are but it is best assumed it is someone big from Galactic Federation cluing in on some scheme to get more power and weapons for the remainder of the human race in ways that are best not tampered with. Sound familiar? YAY!
(Insert random garble below!)
Galactic HQ - "Samus, we need you to go here and be awesome for us!"
Samus - "Yes Sir!"
Galactic HQ - "Samus, we need you to shoot the crap out of the space pirates because their interest in Metroids is obviously dangerous!"
Samus - "Yes SIR!"
Galactic HQ - "Samus, we need you do destroy all their research on Metroids, all of it, weapon use, medical use... just destroy the space pirates and the Metroids and everything else that moves or has anything of relevance while your there...!"
Samus - "YES S.... ah, yea ok sure why not!"
Galactic HQ - "Samus, we need you to capture a live Metroid and bring it back to Galactic HQ for weap... ah I mean Medical technology application theories... yea, that's what I was going to say...!"
Samus - *Face Palm*
Powerful humans, in lots of video games, seem to be moronic at the best of times... "Hey we have a self multiplying, gene copying, psychotic and unthinking virus that has a need for causing destruction!!! LETS CATCH IT AND MAKE IT OUR PET!
Galactic Fed pet store!
Seriously Galactic HQ, you need to stop with the power trip and get onto the task at hand... MAKING THE MULTI-VERSE A BETTER AND SAFER PLACE FOR ALL OF HUMANITY BY DESTROYING WHAT THREATENS OUR EXISTENCE!!! Not collecting a freak show of the most dangerous pets that any life form has ever known JUST so you can build more weapons and continue pointless (in the long term) and dangerous research!
